Who can get an account

Settings → Instance → Who can get an account has four choices:

Choice What happens
Open Anybody can sign themselves up with a username and password. Needs password sign-in enabled on the server.
Identity provider only Anybody your identity provider authenticates gets an account. Nobody else.
Approval required Anybody your identity provider authenticates gets an account, and waits for you to let them in.
Closed Nobody new. Accounts are created from a shell with vibe-live admin create.

The choice governs creating accounts only. Tightening it never locks out somebody who already has an account.

Approving newcomers

With Approval required, waiting accounts appear under Waiting for approval, with when they asked. Approve lets them in. Reject deletes the waiting account -- if it was a mistake, they sign in again and are back in the queue.

Everyone else

The users table lists every account. Delete removes an account and everything of theirs on this instance; it cannot be undone. Users can do the same to their own account from their settings.

Moderating chat

Admins can moderate every channel's chat: delete messages, time people out, ban them, lift bans, and name or remove a channel's moderators. Use the ⋯ menu on a message in any chat, and the channel's settings for the lists. Nothing here is instance-wide: a ban is one channel's. To stop somebody everywhere, delete their account above, or, for people from another instance, turn their instance's chat off in Federation.

An admin counts as one in a chat by being in the admin group when they act. So a moderator cannot ban an admin who is signed in with local admin, but can time out one who is an admin through the group. If that happens, the admin lifts it themselves: any admin may lift any ban. See Chat → Moderating for what streamers and moderators see.

Accounts from other instances

People can sign in here with an account from another vibe-live instance, to watch, follow and chat -- never to stream. That is governed per instance, with the other federation settings: see Federation.

From a shell

For an operator with a shell on the server but no browser session, the same account can be made from the command line:

vibe-live admin create alice # prompts for nothing: reads the password from stdin
vibe-live admin create alice --admin # an admin
