Your account

Signing in

An instance signs you in one of two ways, or both -- its admin decides:

Getting an account depends on the instance: some let anybody sign up, some create accounts for everyone their identity provider knows, some ask an admin to approve new accounts first (you will see a page saying you are waiting), and some are closed to new accounts.

Signing in with an account from another instance

If you have an account on another vibe-live instance, you can use it here without making a new one: on the sign-in page, choose I have an account on another instance and enter your handle (you@your.instance). Your own instance asks you to confirm -- this instance never sees your password -- and sends you back signed in.

As a visitor you can watch, follow and chat (chat only where this instance's admin allows it for yours). You stream on your own instance, never here. This instance's admin can turn visitors off, for everyone or for your instance alone.

Your theme

Settings → Account → Your theme changes how the site looks for you alone. By default you follow the instance's theme. You can pick any of its eight themes instead, and choose Light, Dark, or As my device asks.

Your choice is kept on your account, so it applies on every device you sign in on. It also comes with you when you sign in to another instance with this account.

Password and reset

With a password account, Settings → Account sets or changes it. If you forget it, enter your username on the sign-in page and choose Forgot your password?: a reset link is mailed to the address on your account -- if you gave one, and if the instance has email set up. The link works once. Accounts that come from an identity provider have no password here: sign-in, and anything about it, is the provider's.

Two-factor

Password accounts can add an authenticator app (any TOTP app: Aegis, 2FAS, Google Authenticator, a password manager...) in Settings → Account. You get ten single-use recovery codes: keep them somewhere safe; each one signs you in once if you lose the app.

App passwords

Settings → App passwords → Create new makes a token for scripts and tools -- like a personal access token. It acts as you, but never with admin rights, even if your account has them. Send it as Authorization: Bearer <token>. Each shows when it was last used, and you can revoke any of them.

When you make one, choose what it may do:

The choice is fixed: for different rights, make another.
